这家美国多晶硅生产商自2013年初中国开始对进口多晶硅征收报复性贸易关税以来一直陷入困境。2014年底该公司关闭了它在田纳西的第二个生产基地。这一设施建造数年，但在开工之前就被关闭。
目前Hemlock约有800名全职雇员和800名全职合同工，其中包括在密歇根生产基地和亚洲各销售办事处的人员。
Hemlock未来的道路现在还不明朗。与其他美国多晶硅生产商一样，Hemlock正在向半导体市场出货，但这是一个小得多的市场，而中国的征税也使其雪上加霜。
多晶硅专家Johannes Bernreuter表示，Hemlock严重依赖于执行在多晶硅价格较高时签下的合同，并估计其在密歇根的4.3万吨产能设施的投产量不足60%。同时由于SolarWorld的破产，它对后者的应收账款也可能很难收回。公司宣布裁员极有可能是对上述因素的一种对应。
