南非风能协会(SAWEA)宣布，在南非REIPPPP方案中被选中的风能、太阳能光伏和CSP太阳能发电项目，尚未签署PPA的，将会在今年一季度完成签订。涉及26个可再生能源项目，其中有12个共计813兆瓦的大型光伏电站项目。
去年九月，南非能源部长Mmamoloko Kubayi曾表示，这些购电协议将会在十月底签署，但她也表示，这些PPA价格的上限是0.77兰特(约合0.063美元)/千瓦时。当时南非光伏专家 Chris Ahlfeldt 曾表示，太阳能可能是这一购电协议谈判中受到影响最小的技术。而其他可再生能源技术，如小水电、生物质和CSP等项目原来的投标价格都超过了价格上限的70%及以上。
至2016年底，南非的光伏产能已经达到了1474兆瓦。彭博新能源财经认为，南非今年的安装量可能只有320兆瓦，比2016年减少13%。据称南非光伏产业协会(SAPVIA)在去年12月公布了一项“ 五点行动计划”，旨在每年新增至少1.5吉瓦的太阳能。
