德国“四大”公用事业公司之一的 RWE透露，将放弃在其位于德国北莱茵-威斯特伐利亚州的尼德鲁塞姆（Niederaussem）现有场地建设一座新褐煤发电厂的计划。
Niederaussem电站现有发电总容量为1.2吉瓦。RWE从2012年起就开始规划用更新、效率更高的电厂替换其老化的褐煤发电机。原计划用一台1.1吉瓦的褐煤发电机组作为替代。
公司CEO Rolf Martin Schmitz表示，新的燃煤发电站在该集团面向未来的战略中已不再占有一席之地。“在与E.ON完成交易后，RWE将成为世界领先的可再生能源公司之一。”
RWE还表示，将根据德国的气候目标和义务，进一步投资于可再生能源资产、存储解决方案和低碳技术。同时强调，该公司在过去六年中的碳排放量减少了34%, 即6,000万公吨。
但有能源专家表示，如果RWE认真对待气候责任问题的话，那么它应该在2020年前关闭Neurath和Niederaussem的老旧发电站。欧盟委员会最近公布的统计数据显示，Niederaussem发电站是2018年欧洲第三大二氧化碳排放体，碳排放量为2,590万吨。而该公司的Neurath发电站更是排名第二，2018年碳排量为3,200万吨。
几个月前，RWE因其褐煤煤矿扩建工程到达了德国最古老的原始森林之一哈姆巴赫森林（Hambach Forest）的边界，从而登上了德国的头条热搜。有超过5万民众参加了抗议砍伐森林的活动，并部分占领了该地区。这一示威活动引发了关于德国何时及如何退出煤炭的争议。
