在这个气候条件极端恶劣，干旱、洪水和地震频繁的国家，政府的目标是到2020年实现100%可再生能源生产目标，从而实现完全的能源独立。但根据国际可再生能源机构（IRENA）的最新统计数据，到目前为止，吉布提尚未部署任何太阳能发电产能。
该国目前的装机容量仅有126兆瓦，且全部来自火电设施。据美国国际开发署（USAID）称，吉布提有可能从可再生能源中得到超过300兆瓦的电力。
Engie通过一家子公司，在非洲大陆共拥有约3.15吉瓦的可再生能源产能，包括运营中和仍在开发中的项目。
