英澳矿业巨头力拓已同意根据一份为期20年的电力购买协议（PPA），为其位于马达加斯加南部Fort Dauphin的QIT Madagascar Minerals（QMM）钛铁矿，从风力-太阳能混合发电站购买太阳能电力。QMM是力拓与马达加斯加政府的合资企业，其中力拓拥有公司80%的股份，剩余股份由马达加斯加政府控制。
这个项目将包含一个8 MW的光伏设施，依靠18000块太阳能电池板发电，并与一个由九个涡轮机组成的12 MW风电场相连，由独立电力生产商CrossBoundary Energy（CBE）拥有并运营。预计该光伏系统将于2022年初投入商业运营，风力设施则将于明年年底启用。
力拓集团在一份声明中说，这个混合发电站还将与一个容量高达8.25 MW的锂离子储能系统相连，“它将提供QMM在发电高峰期的所有电力需求，以及高达60%的业务年度电力消耗，”并进一步解释说，“QMM将用可再生能源取代其目前向Fort Dauphin镇和约8万人的社区供应的大部分电力。”
有关该项目的更多技术和财务细节暂未公布。
力拓也曾利用太阳能为其在澳大利亚的采矿业务供电——公司为昆士兰州Weipa一处偏远的铝土矿建造了一个6.7 MW的太阳能阵列。公司去年还开始计划耗资9800万美元，在西澳大利亚州（WA）Pilbara的Koodaideri矿区建造一个太阳能加电池储能系统。
公司希望减少其采矿作业的碳排放，因此正大力投资于太阳能光伏和储能。
