Blue Horizon Energy Consulting Services公司的Chris Ahlfeldt告诉《光伏》杂志，由于南非仍在努力实现减负荷、新冠疫情后经济复苏以及为实现气候减排目标的煤炭公正转型，它需要快速完成这些项目的采购和并网工作。“在第5轮中北开普省的输电容量限制使得一些开发商难以做到这些，因此大多数开发商可能将在第6轮中瞄准其他省份，且可能将当地的社会经济影响扩大到全国其他地区。”
南非当局于2021年3月启动了第五轮REIPPPP计划，共计在25个项目中分配了2.6 GW的可再生能源发电量，这些项目的规模从75 MW到140 MW不等。
在此轮采购中，针对一座在北开普地区汉坦建造的124 MW风电设施的最低投标价是0.34425南非兰特（合0.02338美元）。就太阳能而言，针对预计将在自由州省Lejweleputswa地区的Tokologo行政区建设的6个75 MW太阳能发电园区的最低出价是0.37479南非兰特。
